CRASH!: It's common these days to regard Modern Age comics as more intensely violent or senselessly extreme than their esteemed predecessors, and not without cause. Anyone who thinks that modern superhero stories were the first to revel in violent imagery, however, clearly hasn't taken the time to familiarize themselves with the Golden Age adventures of Jay Garrick! Yes, the man we now regard as the elder statesman of speedsters was once a cruel, rambunctious, hotheaded bully. I offer this jaw-dropping scene--punctuated by a CRASH! and a YEEEEEOW!--as Exhibit A. Look how he delights in each imaginatively mean-spirited attack. That's not to say that these low-life crooks didn't deserve a bit of rough treatment but classic comics reveal how dramatically the tone of our action and our comedy have changed over the passing decades, and thankfully so has the original scarlet speedster!

With Memorial Day behind us, it's time for everyone's favorite sixty-fourth century sorcerer to take a bow. Crimson Lightning's Rogue Spotlight dedicated to the unforgettable, the irrepressible Abra Kadabra is at an end. (And, hocus pocus, it looks as if that wicked magician has made the last week of blog entries... disappear!) Gone is the oddly disturbing parade of puppet imagery. Gone is the seemingly endless presentation of sadistic magic tricks. The Flash has defeated his spellbinding foe time and again, and now the fastest man alive will reclaim our regular blog features as summertime begins.

Abra Kadabra has always been obsessed with applause, craving acclaim and endless attention from the very men and women he ultimately victimizes. The vainglorious villain's peak in popularity, no doubt, was attained during the aforementioned Mark Waid era, in which he served as a recurring arch-nemesis for Wally West. For those looking for a thrilling first-time encounter with Kadabra, reach for a copy of The Flash (v.2) #67, or immerse yourself in the convoluted but mesmerizing "Dark Flash Saga." (Beyond the works of Mark Waid, DC First: Superman/Flash, by Geoff Johns and Rick Burchett, provides and even more accessible introduction to the character.) Never was this singular supervillain more demented, more dangerous, more wonderfully engaging.

Kadabra is as charismatic as he is insane and it's clear he'll remain a mainstay of our hero's illustrious Rogues Gallery far into the future. Blink and you'll miss his fleeting off-screen appearances in The Flash: Rebirth, but that shadowy back-stage puppetry is nonetheless truly foreboding. No one spins a myth-arc like Geoff Johns, and a decisive conflict involving the mad magician speedily approaches. Johns has made it clear that he regards the Flash as a superhero who is integrally associated with time, and a clash between the crimson comet's time-traveling foes seems a tantalizing inevitability. We haven't seen the last of Abra Kadabra...

I chose to transform Crimson Lightning for the month of May, dedicating most of our regular features to my personal favorite of the Flash's Rogues, to pick up the pace a little, so to speak, to change things up. And, after a month of amusing ourselves with panels and pages from Abra Kadabra's memorable appearances throughout the years, it seems as if our first Rogue Spotlight was a success. Considering the size, diversity, and sheer success of the crimson comet's all-but unrivaled Rogues Gallery, it's only natural that the Rogue Spotlight be adopted as a regular feature. Don't be surprised if you see another infamous supervillain taking over the blog someday soon.

The question is, which of the Rogues should seize the spotlight next?

Fast Talk: Radioactive M-Metal

Radioactive M-Metal: We couldn't wrap-up our month-long tribute to the supervillain Abra Kadabra without resurrecting the old Fast Talk feature, for though the character is built from a concept that cleverly allows for the conflation of science and magic, even Kadabra's Silver Age origin is utterly dependent upon senseless scientific technobabble. Desperate to escape the year 6363 A.D. and its society's obsession with scientific achievement, the mad magician Abra Kadabra decides to seize control of a groundbreaking experiment in time travel. The means to traverse centuries is granted by a jury-rigged two-part apparatus: a "time-vehicle" driven through a corresponding portal by the "propulsive force" granted by "radioactive M-metal," a mysterious element harvested from a fallen meteorite. (What happens when you create an alloy of M-metal and Nth metal? Presumably, it would allow you to fly through time whilst knocking out any ghosts or monsters encountered along the way!) If this explanation sounds a little too convenient, it's because it is. Given the questionable terminology spouted by these so-called scientists--who, we are told in a wonderfully over-descriptive narrative, spend their days working in "a building dedicated to science"--it's a miracle that Kadabra survived his trip through time! This, of course, is just one of countless science fiction stories that utilize the broad, widely-misunderstood label "radiation" as a storytelling shortcut. (Kadabra should dose-up on some neo-magnetic radiation while he's at it!) Is it at all conceivable that any form of radiation could provide what is being described here as a propulsive force, let alone propel one through time? Can you imagine what the Periodic Table must look like in the DC Universe?

KRRT: Though the mustache-twirling Abra Kadabra might appear at first glance to be a mere comic caricature, this fugitive from the future is easily the match for some of the DC Universe's darkest villains. Beneath that showman's smile, behind tricks designed to dazzle and distract, seethes a twisted and terrifying psyche. In the hands of Abra Kadabra, even the most childish of magic tricks is made unforgettably macabre. Never was this more true than in tales such as "On the Run" by Mark Waid and Mike Wieringo, one of a chain of stories during which Kadabra took a starring role among Wally West's recurring arch-enemies. Infuriated by repeated defeats, obssessed by the desire to reclaim perceived past glories, the perverse prestidigitator makes his sentiments and intentions clear to a captive Flash by adding grisly punctuation to that old, familiar sleight-of-hand involving a rabbit and a top hat. (Kadabra's diatribe, finishing with a slight but nonetheless sickening sound effect, is presented here in full for its full effect.) What happens to that poor little bunny is better left unspecified--indeed, it cannot even be illustrated! Suffice it to say, this is certainly the most troubling--and, perhaps, dramatically effective--of the onomatopoeia we've seen thus far. Abra Kadabra's is an ego to be reckoned with.

THWOK: It's hard to believe that a technological magician possessing almost limitless power could be defeated with a simple left-hook to the jaw and yet, time and again, this is how the sultan of speed is able to topple his futuristic foe. With a swift blow--represented here but briefly by one of the myriad onomatopoeia variations used to represent hard-hitting punches--Abra Kadabra and his bag of dirty magic tricks are rendered inert. Of course, what makes the Flash such an exceptional superhero is the fact that he cares enough to speedily catch and cradle his nemesis following that blow, sparing Kadabra from an otherwise nasty fall. Again I ask you, is there a more kindhearted hero than Barry Allen?

Sight and Sound: "Chill of the Night!"

"Chill of the Night!," an outstanding installment of Batman: The Brave and the Bold, premiered 9 April 2010 on Cartoon Network. The episode was written by the legendary Paul Dini, directed by Michael Chang, and features Diedrich Bader as Batman, Jennifer Hale as Zatanna, and Jeff Bennett as Abra Kadabra. This animated series provides endless fun, rarely if ever disappoints, and, even with all that being said, "Chill of the Night!" represents its most stunning story to date. Shadowed by the opposing influences of the Spectre and the Phantom Stranger, the caped crusader is forced to choose between justice and vengeance as he follows a trail of clues that may lead him to solve the murder of his parents. In addition to the voice actors listed above, the episode guest stars Adam West, Julie Newmar, Kevin Conroy, and Mark Hamill! As an added bonus, the story features a brief appearance from one of the Flash's renowned Rogues. In the traditional teaser sequence, Batman takes on Abra Kadabra after teaming-up, appropriately enough, with Zatanna. Given Dini's well-known love for the Zatanna, it's clear that in this instance Abra Kadabra was chosen as an appropriate counterpart for the sorceress superhero, not vice versa. Nevertheless, a multitude of Kadabra's familiar tricks from various classic comic appearances are on display as the magicians duel it out at a Gotham City museum. Perhaps next time Batman will let the scarlet speedster himself join in the action!

Onomatopoeia: HA HA HA

HA HA HA: "Feel the strings... Feel the joints... Feel the wood... Feel the points..." With a sudden sparkle, Abra Kadabra performs what may be his favorite magic trick of all, transforming the ill-fated Chester "Chunk" Runk into a bulbous wooden marionette bound by string and rhyming incantation to the demented puppeteer's will. (Puppets, of course, have been associated with the villain ever since the publication of The Flash #133, featuring one of the Silver Age's most memorable classic covers.) Kadabra's so delighted by this trick, in fact, that the air is soon filled with the sinister onomatopoeia we most associate with the comic book supervillain. From an early age we're taught that these joined letters--"HA!"--equate to the sound of human laughter. The onomatopoeia is so ingrained in our consciousness, in fact, that we sometimes utter the word itself in place of actual laughter! None wield it quite so well as the supervillain, however. Where would the likes of the Joker, Sinestro, or Black Manta be without it? In this instance, Abra Kadabra seems only too happy to demonstrate. Is it any wonder Wally West fears for his sanity?

Abra Kadabra remains locked-up at Iron Heights, but the Rogues Gallery proper and their futuristic doubles are spreading havoc in The Flash #2, on sale tomorrow. In all honesty, for this Flash fan's money, the first installment of this revitalized series was more captivating, more entertaining, more impressive than the whole of The Flash: Rebirth combined. Geoff Johns has brought our beloved characters vividly to life for an engrossing, twist-filled tale in the classic scarlet speedster style and, perhaps most notable of all, Francis Manapul's artwork for the series is simply marvelous. It's a joy and a relief to have Manapul on this book, really. In other words, "The Dastardly Death of the Rogues" is shaping up to be the sort of story arc that you don't want to miss! Not convinced? SSSCREEE: The outcast magician Abra Kadabra makes his escape from the distant year 6363 A.D. in "The Case of the Real-Gone Flash" by John Broome and Carmine Infantino. It's not magic that provides the means for his travel across centuries, of course, but science. Launching a stolen rocket through a time portal developed by the enterprising scientists of his era, Kadabra must first endure a harrowing plunge through the screaming torrents of the time stream, visually represented for us in beautiful flowing style by Infantino's use of an appropriate onomatopoeia. This is one of those ideal instances in which the sound effect itself is artistically integrated with the composition of the panel--which is, perhaps, more than we can say for the timeship's subsequent "PLOP!"

Rogue Spotlight: Abra Kadabra

Things have been running a bit slow of late here at Crimson Lightning, and that simply won't do. How shall we liven things up? I've decided to take my cue from The Idol Head of Diabolu, Frank Lee Delano's wonderful tribute to the Martian Manhunter, which often dedicates itself to examining the "Vile Menagerie" that has threatened J'onn J'onzz over the years. For the month of May, then, we're going to embrace insanity and give the blog over to a member of the Flash's own celebrated Rogues Gallery, and I know precisely where to start...

Abra Kadabra is my favorite Rogue. That may prove a surprising or controversial admission, particularly among the cult of Captain Cold or those who revere the Reverse Flash, but no one entertains me like that sadistic sorcerer from the sixty-fourth century. (Fortunately for us, the Flash indisputably has some of the greatest villains in comicdom, and it's terribly difficult to choose a favorite!) Created by John Broome and Carmine Infantino for The Flash #128 (May 1962), Abra Kadabra serves as an embodiment of Arthur C. Clarke's law that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."

An exile from the sterile world of the sixty-fourth century, utterly obsessed with the showmanship of the old time stage magician, Kadabra's banishment to the twentieth century allowed him to wield mind-bogglingly advanced technology disguised as sorcery, and Central City's crimson comet soon became his foremost target. As a result, The Flash blatantly engaged in an exploration of the sort of intellectual transmutation that takes place in the pages of every single superhero comic, where the lines between scientific achievement and pure, inexplicable magic are bent, twisted, and made all-but indistinguishable. Truly, Abra Kadabra is a sort of rebellious poster child for the rules that made the great Silver Age and dictated the shape of all that would follow. He is the "magic" to counter the Flash's "science," though the two share far more in common than meets the eye.

Though Abra Kadabra stands as perhaps my favorite supervillain in the Flash's distinctive line-up of arch-nemeses, this wasn't always the case. It was writer Mark Waid who made it so beginning in The Flash (v.2) #67 (August 1992), slowly twisting the character into one of Wally West's most obsessive, dangerous, and cruelly entertaining foes. In Waid's hands, the charismatic Kadabra became both physically and mentally deformed, his ever-more spectacular defeats scarring his body and warping his mind. When confronting his mortal enemy, Kadabra delighted in performing as conjurer, illusionist, puppeteer, and prestidigitator, repeatedly forcing the scarlet speedster to serve as escape artist. The mad magician, a calculating Moriarty to Wally's Holmes, possessed that precise combination of qualities that makes for superb supervillainy: dangerous power and sinister intent fueled by a flare for the dramatic, a sick, sadistic, and sometimes downright silly sense of manic playfulness. Ever since the sort of memorable battles witnessed in the likes of "The Dark Flash Saga," the appearance of Abra Kadabra on the comic book page has always left me giddy. His recent rivalry with fellow time traveler Professor Zoom, tantalizingly hinted at in Geoff Johns and Ethan Van Sciver's The Flash: Rebirth, has me hooked.

For the month of May, Crimson Lightning will be dedicated to the one and only Abra Kadabra. Presto chango! Our regular features will continue on their regular schedule, but you'll find that the likes of Onomatopoeia, Ad Run, Sight and Sound, and Classic Covers will be dominated by Kadabra's twisted magic tricks. Might we spotlight other Rogues in the months to come? Time will tell. For now, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, prepare to be astonished, amazed, and a little bit sickened! The show is about to begin...

FWAM: Another attack delivered at astonishing super-speed, this particular blow carries added weight for we are witnessing the one and only Jay Garrick assault his esteemed successor! Given the great energy of Greg LaRocque's artwork, given the shocking display involving two such classic characters, a single four-letter onomatopoeia, artfully placed, is all that's required to leave the reader reeling. This may be our most powerful instance of onomatopoeia yet. Of course, as this panel is taken from the climax of Mark Waid's mind-bending "The Return of Barry Allen" storyline, there's more to this scene than meets the eye...

WHROOO: When we refer to the exploits of the fastest man alive as whirlwind adventures, we're not always speaking metaphorically! Here, the Flash attempts to counteract a threatening tornado with his own crimson cyclone, creating an incomparable cacophony in the process. In the evocative verbiage of John Broome, "The roar of a thousand freight-trains slashing across broken rails is but a whisper compared to the roar of the tornado." (Sound familiar? That'd be because this particular effect seems to be something of a trademark of the era, the sort of sound Mr. Broome associated with the scarlet speedster's superpowers. It's the same distinctive device discussed in our very first installment of Onomatopoeia, from The Flash #182!)

With the cosmos-churning Blackest Night crossover event consuming comic stands and comic fans everywhere, our regular Quick Quiz feature turned its attention to the grim, villainous horde of undead tormenting the denizens of the DC Universe. In addition to allowing Barry Allen to assume the dazzling mantle of a Blue Lantern, Blackest Night: The Flash resurrected a number of his fallen foes--including Golden Glider, the Top, Rainbow Raider, Captain Boomerang--in terrifying new guises. Of these deceased members of the Flash's Rogues Gallery, who was your favorite Black Lantern?

Golden Glider, deceased since the release of The Flash (v.2) #113 back in May of 1996, picked up 9% of all votes. The Top--a villain who seems to alternate between life and death on a regular, rotating basis and has surely faced his end more often than most comic book characters--leapt into the lead with an impressive 27% of the vote. Sam Scudder, the original Mirror Master, earned the attentions of 14% of all respondents. The one and only Rainbow Raider, now robbed of his precious colors, took another 9% of the tally. James Jesse, the original Trickster, seized 14% of the vote. 9% of the blog's readers chose Digger Harkness, the original Captain Boomerang. Last, but certainly not least, at least 18% of all respondents selected Professor Zoom, the Reverse Flash. A meager twenty-two readers participated in this particular poll.

By now, of course, Blackest Night has been brought to its close. And, like any art form, onomatopoeia has its nuances. Simply presenting the literal term for a given comic book action in a bold font and bright colors would be missing the point completely, of course. There's no doubt about that.

"Building off of Danny Elfman’s rousing theme, acclaimed composer Shirley Walker composes and conducts an exhilarating orchestral super-hero score that chronicles the thrilling adventures of one of DC Comics’ most beloved superheroes, the Flash. Produced by Ford A. Thaxton and mastered by James Nelson, this two-disc release features over two hours of astounding music and includes in-depth liner notes by Randall D. Larson."

Anyone who has perused the episodic reviews of this blog's Live Action feature knows precisely how I feel about this announcement. Shirley Walker's incredible soundtrack work on the series stood out and unquestionably served to help the scarlet speedster's adventures stand apart from other televised fare. Indeed, on more than one occasion, her enticing, jazzy, energetic compositions single-handedly raised the caliber of an otherwise unremarkable story. Walker was a truly gifted composer and this is truly wonderful news. I can't wait to get my hands on this album!

WAAAK, etc: WAAAK. WOK, WOK, WOK. THOOK. KRUNNCH. These are the brutal, stomach-churning noises of a life-or-death struggle taking place at inhuman speed. Given that no less than five speedsters are engaged in the attack, to an eyewitness of this battle pitting the Flash, Lady Flash, and the Kapitalist Kouriers against the Soviet super-soldier Proletariat, those grim sounds would likely be all that could be discerned of the event. This chaotic panel also goes to show that, despite the necessity for onomatopoeia in comic book storytelling and the inherent fun in such wordplay, you can definitely have too much of a good thing!

Designer Chow Hon Lam created this hilarious image of the fastest man alive in an uncomfortable encounter with a traffic cop as an installment of his "Flying Mouse 365" project. We've all been there at one time or another, Barry! Synopsis: Superman was just flying by when he happened to see a truck accidentally run Jimmy Olsen's car off a cliffside road. "He probably couldn't slow down in time--He must've been doing at least 65! As soon as I get him to safety, I'll have a word with him about his reckless driv--HUH?!" Mysteriously, Olsen's car hung motionless in the air, and even the Man of Steel wasn't strong enough to move it.

Meanwhile, Barry Allen patrolled Central City as the Flash, staring down the bullets of a bank robber. Flash was shocked to see the slugs slow to a dead stop in midair, as he found himself surrounded by living statues.

The Last Son of Krypton heard a vaguely familiar sound, "the ultra-sonic tone of Jimmy's Superman Signal-Watch... but slowed down to a frequency that would be audible to 'non-super' ears!" Time hadn't so much stopped as decelerated to the point of being nearly undetectable. The Man of Tomorrow was filled with questions about the matter, as it ran contrary to all physical laws... and should he correct the situation, would he still have time to save Jimmy?

The Flash too could not determine why he alone in all the city seemed exempted from the phenomenon, and how he could address the matter without the unattended bullets passing through the beautiful form of his neighbor, Fiona Webb. At first Allen thought this may be the work of one of his rogues, but a quick inspection showed the whole nation effected, at least.

102 miles from Central City and 322 from Metropolis, an otherworldly craft hovered over Wonderland amusement park. The spaceship projected a beam carrying an alien visitor, which assumed the form of the Fastest Man Alive. This faux Flash called out to Superman as the hero flew overhead. Questions weighed on the Man of Steel's brow almost as heavily as the anachronistic pompadour hairstyle he was still sporting--like why his fellow Justice Leaguer was taking credit for the slowdown in time. "I can't believe that! It doesn't make any sense! What would his motive be--? I'd better catch up with him and demand an explanation!"

The facsimile Flash hid, transforming into a pseudo Superman, then running the same game on the true Scarlet Speedster. An important variation was that this time, "Superman" flattened Flash with a haymaker before disappearing altogether. In predictable Marvel Comics fashion, Kal-Elvis and the Flash had been led into a misunderstanding that was complicated by an accusatory shouting match. "If you think I'm going to stand here and let you sucker me with another 'super-surprise'... you've got Kryptonite rocks in your head! Instead, I'll 'fan' my arms at super-speed-- and create an obstacle... Specifically, that wall of super-compressed air you just hit! I hope it knocked some sense into you!"

When Superman got up off his Posterior of Steel, it was on like Donkey Kong, as Kal-El kicked the Flash across the park. Crimson Lightning landed and streaked across roller coaster tracks, leading Superman into a loop-de-loop turnabout allowing for twin Flash fists to crash against the Strange Visitor's face. The Flash then held onto the Man of Steel's back with a choke hold, as the heroes began comparing notes and calming down. "Wait a minute--! Maybe we're both wrong!" Superman agreed. "I'm getting the same feeling, Flash! It's beginning to look like we've been tricked into fighting each other... by an impostor who first posed as you... then as me!"

Three green-skinned, white-haired aliens looked on from an open platform on the spaceship. Syryna dressed in a purple gown and crown with white cape and gold highlights. Klaanu was stocky, balding and bare-chested in his orange and blue uniform. Minaar was virtually identical, but bore a goatee, and said "The energy-siphoning process has been interrupted, Your Glory! The costumed ones have ceased fighting!" Syryna assumed the jig was up, and ordered Klaanu to capture the heroes. From his sword was emitted an energy net that was too strong for Superman, but couldn't stand up to Flash as a human tornado. Super-breath knocked Klaanu unconscious to the ground, but Big Blue and Scarlet Speedster were distracted by illusory monsters created by Syryna until Minaar's stun-blade caught them both unawares.

"When our heroes regain consciousness, they find themselves under restraint aboard the alien vessel-- and lashed to a bizarre machine that keeps them vibrating at super-speed..." Syryna explained that the heroes would come to know and fear her name as long as they lived. Syryna had the foresight to bind Superman in Kryptonian restraints before launching into her back story.

"I rule the people of Elykaar-- a land in another dimension. A rebel faction which seeks to overthrow me has been making attempts on my life... such as the bomb they hid beneath this vessel! But the rebels miscalculated! Their explosive was not powerful enough to destroy the Flying Fortress... but it did propel the vessel so fast that it ripped open a passageway into another dimension-- yours! My presence here in your universe caused a disruption in its space-time continuum! Its nature remains unknown, but its effect was, I trust, obvious!" Syryna further hypothesized that Flash and Superman were unaffected because they were moving at super-speed during her arrival. Unable to achieve the speed necessary to pierce the dimensional barrier and return home, Syryna meant to siphon off the super-speed energy of our heroes with a device "beyond your comprehension." Once the heroes saw through Syryna's ruse to keep them generating speed by fighting one another, her other option was to enslave them as living super-speed engines for her ship.

Tough cookies for Syryna, as Superman had figured out that the gem on her forehead glowed whenever she used her illusion powers--like when she made them see bonds that weren't actually there! If his chains were really kryptonite, after all, he'd be powerless. Instead, freed, the speedsters were faced with an army of Minaar duplicates. Flash's fleet feet separated the real Minaar from the phonies, while Superman's heat vision made Minaar drop his energy-blade. Afterward, the Man of Tomorrow caught up with Syryna, and shattered her gem in the palm of his hand.

Returning the "flying fortress" to Syryna's home planet, Superman and the Flash turned the evil ruler over to the victorious rebels. In return, Superman needed to know Syryna's original point of departure, so that they could return to Earth exactly where they left it through adjusting their vibratory speed. Unfortunately, Earth was literally the same, still frozen in time. Kal-El realized Klaanu was still on Earth, and responsible for the continued slowdown. Catching the creep and returning him to his world, the twin speedsters had only seconds to get back in time to save Jimmy and Fiona.

Kal-El was glad to finally have a chance to relax, and wanted to pal around with Flash some more at JLA headquarters, but the Scarlet Speedster had appointments to keep, "--and time is flying!" Superman was glad to hear it!

KRAM!: That curt, clipped, tremendously bold-faced four letter word, accented with a mere exclamation point, used throughout the issue to announce the arrival of the villainous Dreadnought, demonstrates that even the simplest of onomatopoeia can be potent when backed up with appropriately evocative narration. I'll leave the description in the capable hands of Mr. Len Wein: "Thunder in the afternoon--the deafening roar of an awesome machine as it churns its way through the cluttered streets of Central City. This is the Dreadnought--pile-driving juggernaut of crime--which appears from nowhere and vanishes with equal agility--leaving crumbling devastating in its wake--yet no trace of a trail to follow!" There is, without a doubt, a profound poetry inherent to these comic books.

The holiday edition of Newsarama's 20 Questions with Dan Didio includes some startling news for fans of the scarlet speedster. In spite of all previous announcements, the planned Kid Flash ongoing series has been canceled, along with the much-discussed back-up feature for The Flash starring Wally West. Bart and Wally are being banished to the background in an effort to allow the resurrected Barry Allen to lead. As DC's Executive Editor explains, "Your Flash fix will be Barry Allen, pure and simple, for 2010." Kelson Vibber discusses the announcement in some detail over at Speed Force and, I have to say, I identify with his frustration. This is a disappointment, to say the least.
